Palo Alto Adult School Celebrates 90 Years

This year marks the 90th year anniversary for Palo Alto Adult School (PAAS). At its founding in 1921, PAAS focused on English as a Second Language (ESL) and Citizenship. Trades and leisure activities were then added. World Languages have long been a staple of the program, in addition to Music, Parent Education, and Career Training.

Today's offerings have grown to include Career Technical Education (CTE) and Education for Independent Living and Community Education. The mission of the school has always been to provide a broad range of programs to a diverse community of students to achieve their educational, vocational and personal goals. PAAS is self-supporting and annually serves a student population of more than 8000 students.

As part of the PAAS 90th year celebration, the school has begun a Community Partnership Program. Each quarter, PAAS will recognize a local organization that shares the goal to improve the lives of the community through the delivery of high quality services or education. This winter, PAAS recognizes the Stanford Blood Center for its leadership in transfusion medicine and its support for local hospitals with needed blood products. PAAS also supports this important profession by offering Phlebotomy classes as part of its Career Training program.

PAUSD Superintendent Kevin Skelly states, "Palo Alto is very fortunate to have the Adult School as part of our school district. For 90 years, we have been able to support adult individuals with very different needs by delivering high quality, affordable education. I hope that everyone in the community will attend one of the excellent adult classes this winter."
