Swine Flu and Santa Clara County Schools

The Santa Clara County Health Department has informed Palo Alto Unified that, although there have been no cases yet reported in Santa Clara County, we are nonetheless in a High State of Alert in regard to the Swine Flu outbreak.

Swine Flu presents as the flu, with temperature of 102 or higher, achiness, runny nose, coughing and a general feeling of being unwell.

If your child is ill and presents these symptoms, please keep him/her out of school and seek qualified medical advice.

Children who become ill at school will be sent to the Main Office or Health Office, where a decision will be made about his/her attendance. If your child is running a fever, you will be notified to pick up him/her from school.

Pay particular attention to a child who has recently been on an airplane or who has recently returned from Mexico.

All parents should review sanitary practices with their child – e.g., Cover coughs; use tissues; wash hands often with soap and water; avoid contact with persons who are ill; and reduce the spread of germs by not touching eyes, nose or mouth.

District staff will continue to monitor information from the Santa Clara County Health Department and share pertinent updates with you.
